Just who have we sinned against?
[Psa 51:1 KJV] [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.]] Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
We know when we sin.
[Psa 51:2 KJV] Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
If your heart is turned to the things of God, you want that evil washed off of you, even when you have nobody but yourself to hang.
[Psa 51:3 KJV] For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin [is] ever before me.
This is a good place to be. Know that you are a sinner and need a Savior.
[Psa 51:4 KJV] Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done [this] evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, [and] be clear when thou judgest.
Our sins small and great often involve hurting somebody else. At the moment, though, we rarely think about sinning in the presence of God. Here we are, though in the presence of God! We have lots of songs that will mention something like "I want to be in Your presence". Well, of course, when we're in worship we want to be in His presence. But what about when we want to really let somebody have it? Or just do what we want to do? We're still in His presence.
Who paid the most extravagant price for our soul? And in who's presence do we do what we do?
Born in sin
[Psa 51:5 KJV] Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
[Psa 51:6 KJV] Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden [part] thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
[Psa 51:7 KJV] Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
[Psa 51:8 KJV] Make me to hear joy and gladness; [that] the bones [which] thou hast broken may rejoice.
[Psa 51:9 KJV] Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
Create in me a clean heart
[Psa 51:10 KJV] Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
[Psa 51:11 KJV] Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
[Psa 51:12 KJV] Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me [with thy] free spirit.
[Psa 51:13 KJV] [Then] will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
[Psa 51:14 KJV] Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: [and] my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
[Psa 51:15 KJV] O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
If You don't clean me, how can I possibly stand in Your presence?
A meaningful sacrifice
[Psa 51:16 KJV] For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give [it]: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
[Psa 51:17 KJV] The sacrifices of God [are] a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
[Psa 51:18 KJV] Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
[Psa 51:19 KJV] Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.
Only You can clean me. What can I bring before you? A humbled heart.
